Presentation: Latif Dramani, Demographic Dividend in West and Central Africa

Abstract

This paper is devoted to expanding knowledge on the interaction between population and economy in the world and particularly in Africa. This article estimates the support ratios and phases of the first demographic dividend in West and Central Africa using data from microeconomic consumption and income surveys at country level. The results obtained using the National Transfer Accounts (NTA) methodology from a sample of sixteen countries show that the window of opportunity for the first dividend is already open in West and Central Africa. Our results highlight that the economic potential derived from the demographic dividend is greater in Central Africa than in West Africa.
