NTA2020 Braun

Global Meeting on Population and the Generational Economy, August 2020

Presentation: Kathryn L. Braun, Hawai‘i’s Multicultural Elder Population

Abstract

The population of Hawai‘i is ethnically diverse, with no single racial or ethnic group in the majority. This presentation will provide a brief review of the state’s in-migration events that led to the state’s ethnic diversity, examine the long-standing disparity in life expectancy across the state’s five largest ethnic groups (Native Hawaiians, Japanese, Caucasian, Filipino, and Chinese), and discuss later-life living and caregiving patterns across groups.

Kathryn L. Braun, DrPH, is Professor of Public Health and Social Work, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
