Presentation: Michael Abrigo, How are generations related? Network structures in intergenerational transfers in the Philippines

Abstract

Intergenerational transfers play an important role in filling in the consumption-versus-resource gaps across the economic lifecycle. In many ways this has reinforced inter-dependencies across different cohorts of populations. In this study, we describe the evolution of this linkages in the Philippines based on reconstructed inter-generational public and private transfer inflow-outflow matrices using recent time-series estimates of National Transfer Accounts. We document how the direction and degree of transfers across three generations, i.e., young, prime-age adults, and elderly, changed over the last twenty-five years. We also characterize the network centrality of different generations in each broad form of inter-generational transfer.
