Working Group reports

Economic of Aging Indicators

Róbert Gál (email) reported that NTA has a lot of indicators, but the working group needs to organize them and choose the best ones. For this purpose, the group will set up a page on the NTA website with a taxonomy and description of all the indicators. To take this work further, they are seeing a grant from the European Commission.

Bequests, Capital Transfers

Miguel Sánchez Romero (email) reported that this working group has created a spreadsheet describing bequests and other capital transfers in 23 countries. The spreadsheet is posted on the NTA website at Bequests, Capital Transfers. Future work includes:

  • Develop a model for inter-vivos capital transfers
  • Update the spreadsheet with new UN data
  • Upload new asset-base reallocation data
  • Gert feedback on the spreadsheet
  • Compare survey data on wealth and bequests with results from the bequest spreadsheet

Time Use and Gender

Gretchen Donehower (email) reported that there is no single ideal way to impute wage values for unpaid family labor. For the present, members of the working group can share data on time use and estimate values using different wage scales. Future plans include country papers, a journal article, and improved quality control using cross-country comparisons.

Inequality and Sub-Group Analysis

Tim Miller (email) presented a to-do list for this working group:

  • Use available data on SES and link to aging
  • Put up on online manual
  • Prepare outreach materials: policy briefs, web pages, a one-minute talk, and a book
  • Hold a regional meeting in Peru in the fall of 2014

In addition, the group is thinking about developing messages on human-capital investment and on measures of wellbeing that include consumption and leisure. They also plan to expand data collection and analysis.

Generational Accounting

Young Jun Chun (email) reported that the working group discussed the contents of the upcoming book on generational accounting, presented several chapters, reviewed the current completion status, and agreed on the schedule for completion over the next few months.

Demographic Dividend

Adedoyin Soyibo (email) reported that the group discussed results from Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa plus partial results from new NTA members Ghana and Ethiopia. The goal is to use NTA results to analyze problems such as including jobless economic growth. Member-country teams will complete their accounts by the end of June for presentation in a report of cross-country comparison and analysis.
