In the news

Joze Sambt and his colleague, Mitja Cok, wrote an article in Delo (a Slovenian newspaper) about the importance of pension-reform measures that the Slovenian government passed in December 2010. The article emphasized the need for increasing the current pensionable age and featured NTA research. The article (in Slovenian) can be found on the NTA homepage. The reform measures were put up for popular referendum on June 5, but unfortunately they did not pass.

Andy Mason wrote an editorial for China Daily: Economics of aging population. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser also ran an article based on NTA project findings, titled Aging of Asia. Links to these articles can also be found on NTA homepage.

The Comptroller General of Costa Rica highlighted the research of the NTA Costa Rican team (Luis Rosero-Bixby and Pamela Jimenez-Fontana) in this year's Annual Report of the Comptroller General to the Costa Rican Legislature. The first chapter of the Comptroller's report was entitled "The Fiscal Impacts of Population Aging: Challenges and Opportunites". The annual report is available in Spanish online at: Memoria Anual 2010 (note: it is a large pdf document and takes a long time to load). The complete manuscript provided to the Comptroller General by the NTA team is also available online.

Research from the Latin American and Caribbean NTA group was highlighted in the annual report on poverty issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for the region. The annual report, "Social Panorama of Latin America 2010" focused on educational differences and the recurrence of inequality in Latin America and the need for state intervention to break the cycle. Thanks to Cassio Turra of the Brazil group for leading the effort. The NTA chapter was entitled "The generational economy, transfer systems, and inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean" and can be downloaded here.

Meeting on Unpaid Labor Satellite Accounts

Several members of the Working Group on Time Use and Gender met in Berkeley on June 12 and 13 to discuss their progress and brainstorm solutions to problems encountered during their work. They have been using Time Use data to estimate the age profiles of non-market labor, consumption and transfers for several countries, or are getting ready to begin this work.

The meetings focused on documenting the methods used by the different teams. A draft of the methodology will be posted to the NTA wiki so that all country teams who are interested in starting this important work can benefit from the experience of others.

Please contact Gretchen, the coordinator of the working group on Time Use and Gender, if you would like more information about the meeting or the group.
